Nobody knows what the future will bring for networks like Adwords, Yahoo PPC, and MSN Adcenter. The saturation of marketers, niches, and offers has become very high and the days of making thousands of dollars a day paying nearly nothing for your clicks are long gone. The internet is constantly changing and it seems that Facebook is doing their best to keep up with everything that is happening on the internet in relation to trends, marketers wants, and their users wants.
The main reason why Facebook is so successful is because of the popularity of their network. Close to 100 million high school students, college students, and other people are registered and log in every single day of the week. Facebook has become much of an addiction and a necessity across high schools and college campuses. By experts predictions, Facebook will continue to grow for decades to come. Their network includes every feature a teenager or college student could ever want to stay in contact with their friends. The evolution of Facebook Applications proved to be very successful by allowing developers to create their own applications and place them on Facebook.
If you can’t tell by my excitement towards Facebook, it’s really an amazing place to be right now if you are a marketer. The opportunities are abundant, all you need is a bit or originality to turn large profits.

How does a website like yahoo or facebook make so much money?
I mean how exactly do they make money, i dont think its just the ads on these websites that generate all that cash, plus i have personally never pain a cent for yahoo or facebook, facebook doesnt even have ads, yet the founders of these websites are billionaires, where’s the cash coming from? How does this work?

I would imagine that you could create an application and sell advertising on it, but don't do that unless you can make a really good application because there are already way to many applications that aren't any good…

Yeah, there is. I think the reason most companies make up Applications is so they can bulk up their "Mailing Lists" for advertising. This is considered pretty valuable, considering you gave them permission when signing up – so they are free to "spam" you however often they want until you opt-out.
Also, you can promote your application through ads. Ask people to purchase ad space on your application. You can also sell the information to companies if the application allows you to collect information that they would be interested in.

Also if you're really big (i.e. the media covers your application) a company might want to buy out your application.
Lastly, just the value a high profile application has on your CV would make you more employable so technically I would imagine this could earn you money in the long term.
It's free to add your application to Facebook, you don't pay them and they don't pay you.. but you are locked into their platform which ensures your loyalty to Facebook.

Yes, there's a few ways you can make money with Facebook WITHOUT making an application. One of the most obvious ways is through Facebook Social Ads. This is like the new Google Ads, except it's not as effective for everything. You have to know what to advertise and what to promote.
Let me give you a really quick overview here. First off, the Facebook population is primarily college students and young people, so only a select few topics can be sold to them. These topics include online dating sites, health/diet/fitness products, and money-savings related topics.
You can sign-up for free at ClickBank.com to become an affiliate and promote tons of different digital products.

The way it works is the person placing the ad pays either "CPC" which stands for "cost-per-click" or they pay "CPM" which stands for "cost-per-impression. Cost-per-click is pretty self-explanatory and all you need to know. But impressions, for your info, are the number of times an ad actually shows up.
So you pay a certain amount to get some number of clicks. When people click on the ad, it directs them to a ClickBank product with your affiliate link in it. The difference between the cost of running the advertisement (your budget), and the commission you get from the ClickBank product, is your profit. There's also ways to calculate and optimize this profit.
